The feeling I got after a recent visit to Shanghai Oriental, a modern Cantonese restaurant in Larkhall, was one of pleasant surprise. Despite being a regular takeaway customer at their sister restaurant Shanghai Teahouse in Bothwell, I wasn’t convinced that dining in would top a cozy takeaway on the sofa. However, as soon as I stepped inside the busy restaurant, I knew I was wrong. The place was mobbed with diners and the refurbishments inside are impressive. Jimmy, a regular chef on ITV’s This Morning show and owner of Glasgow’s Lychee Oriental, spent months teaching the Shanghai Oriental kitchen staff to improve their understanding of oriental cooking. The menu combines traditional flavors with modern cooking techniques. The food was comforting and authentic, and the atmosphere was lively. Shanghai Oriental is well worth a visit – it was much much more than just OK.
