In 2022, the Scotch whisky industry contributed £7.1bn to the UK economy and supported 66,000 jobs across the country, with 41,000 of those jobs in Scotland. This industry is responsible for generating £3 in every £100 of Scotland’s total Gross Value Added (GVA) and is the second most productive sector in Scotland, ranking just behind the energy sector. Mark Kent, Chief Executive of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), emphasized the significance of the industry’s economic contribution and called for government support to ensure continued investment in the UK economy. The report also highlighted the industry’s role in driving productivity in Scotland, with the manufacturing of beverages (dominated by Scotch) producing £273,000 GVA per employee.
