Mara offers fantastic Italian wines and creative small plates in Aberdeen. Grant Dickie visits the city’s newest dining spot.
After a long day at work, nothing beats relaxing with wine and delicious food. Mara, located on Thistle Street, brings a fresh Italian-inspired approach to Aberdeen’s dining scene.
Owned by chef Ross Cochrane and his wife Carolina, Mara is a cozy spot with a regularly changing menu based on seasonal ingredients.
The menu offers a tempting selection of dishes. We shared four plates and a bottle of Mara Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso, a smooth red wine that paired perfectly with the lamb special.
We savored the smoked chicken, hake with gem lettuce, Caesar and onion, and truffle fries. Each dish was flavorful and well-executed.
To end our meal, we enjoyed the Sicilian orange polenta cake, a delightful surprise that showcased the versatility of polenta.
Mara is a great spot for post-work drinks and dining. The bar seating is perfect for a relaxing evening with quality food and wine.
Although slightly higher priced, the quality of the food justifies the cost. I look forward to returning to try more dishes on the menu.
